Designees of the Business News Luminaries of the Century

Forty-two of the 100 named to the list of Business News Luminaries of the Century were deceased. Other honorees were unable to attend the March 10 dinner. In their absence, family members, noted peers and contemporaries who shared either some link with the honoree or their accomplishments were asked to sit on stage and stand on their behalf. Following is a list of those designees:

  • Alan Abelson -- Kate Welling, who worked with Mr. Abelson more than 20 years at Barron's.


    Former Barron's staffer Kate Welling had a chance to catch up with Donald McDonald, former vice chairman of Dow Jones & Company.

  • Clarence W. Barron -- Great-granddaughter Jane McElree, who serves on the board of Dow Jones & Company.
  • Mel Beiser -- Mr. Beiser's daughter, Melanie Beiser.

  • Elliott V. Bell -- Daniel Bases, current president of the New York Financial Writers' Association, which Mr. Bell helped found.

  • Robert M. Bleiberg -- Mr. Bleiberg's son, Richard.
  • Dorothea Brooks -- Majorie Silverman, who worked with Ms. Brooks after she left UPI and joined PRNewswire.
  • Gene Cervi -- His daughter, Cle Simmons, who served as publisher of Cervi's Rocky Mountain Journal following her father's death.
  • John Chamberlain -- Family Peter Himler, executive vice president of media relations at Burson-Marsteller.
  • Lindley H. Clark Jr. -- Wall Street Journal reporter Tom Herman, whom Mr. Clark served as a role model for.
  • G.D. Crain Jr. -- His two sons, Rance, president of Crain Communications, and Keith, chairman of Crain Communications.
  • Burton Crane -- Money magazine veteran Jordan Goodman, who wrote The Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms, which includes some of the terms Mr. Crane coined.
  • Dan Dorfman -- Kate Bohner, who as assistant managing editor of JAGnotes News, works with Mr. Dorfman.
  • Philip H. Dougherty -- His son, Paul.
  • Louis W. Fairchild -- Jane Reilly, former senior editor at former Fairchild publication Men's Wear Magazine and a member of the New York Financial Writers' Association.
  • B.C. Forbes and Malcolm Forbes -- Forbes corporate communications director Ray Healy.
  • Bernard A. Goldhirsh -- Former Inc. editor Stephen Solomon, director of the Business and Economic Reporting program at New York University.
  • William H. Grimes -- Dan Henninger, deputy editor of the Wall Street Journal's editorial page.
  • Louis Guenther -- Stephen Taub, former editor in chief of Financial World, the magazine Mr. Guenther founded.
  • Henry Hazlitt -- Donald J. Boudreaux, executive director of the Foundation for Economic Education, a free-market think tank that Mr. Hazlitt helped found.
  • Kenneth C. Hogate -- David Bohmer, director of the Center for Contemporary Media at DePauw University, where Mr. Hogate was graduated.
  • John W. Huey Jr. -- Fortune senior writer Patricia Sellers.
  • Wanda Jablonski -- Jan Stuart, editor of Petroleum Intelligence Weekly, the newsletter Ms. Jablonski started.

  • James McGraw -- Robert Pondiscio, communications director for Business Week.
  • Alexander Dana Noyes -- Christine Bockelmann, co-author of The New York Times Century of Business, which includes articles by Mr. Noyes.
  • William J. O'Neil -- Lerry Wilson, of Wilson McHenry Company.
  • Sylvia F. Porter -- Personal finance writer Kathy Kristof who took over for Ms. Porter after her death.
  • A.H. Raskin -- His wife, Marge.
