Information on 2001 Honorees

Five outstanding business journalists received the 2001 TJFR Group/MasterCard International Business News Luminaries Award March 9, 2001 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

More than 250 people attended the luncheon, which also served as a reunion for winners of last year's Business News Luminaries of the 20th Century. Additionally, the gathering paid tribute to the business news staff of the old New York Herald Tribune and served as a fundraiser for the newly established Business News Luminaries Awards Fellowship in Business and Economic Reporting at New York University.

The five new recipients were: James Flanigan, senior economics editor and business columnist for the Los Angeles Times; Gene G. Marcial, Wall Street columnist for Business Week; Jai Singh, founding editor of CNET News.com; Edward R. Cony, former managing editor of The Wall Street Journal and Ben Weberman, former Capital Markets columnist for Forbes.

Both Mr. Marcial and Mr. Singh were on hand to receive their awards and accepting for Mr. Flanigan was Thomas Mulligan of the New York bureau of the Los Angeles Times. Accepting for Mr. Cony, who died last year, was his daughter, Katharine Dunn, and Nancy Rilander accepted for her father, Mr. Weberman, who died in 1994.

David Ignatius, executive editor of the International Herald Tribune, gave the keynote address and CNBC's Ron Insana served as master of ceremonies while Jim Bellows, the final editor of the NYHT, led the alumni in a trip down memory lane.

Several of the 2000 Business News Luminaries attended along with many of today's prominent business journalists.
