What he has said about himself: "I love the newsroom, the scoops. I've always been a newspaper guy. I think it's a very romantic occupation. I love being around reporters."

About joining Bloomberg News: People like Mr. Bloomberg "have been buying money, selling money, trading money, and investing money for a living for years. I thought it was a great opportunity to marry their intelligence and knowledge about money, which has been lacking in journalism, and combine it with the intelligence and knowledge and writing talent of journalists, and put it on a real-time basis."

What others have said about him: Randall Rothenberg, an Esquire contributing editor who helped reorganize Bloomberg's European news division: "Matt Winkler loves scoops. He loves investigative projects, great leads, good writing. Of course, their bread and butter is market reports."
